I personally don't think Aronofsky is even close to three you mentioned before him. Maybe Lars Von Trier?

He is more consistent, but I'd say the Coens have at least an equal number of masterpieces in there. Barton Fink, Lebowski, A Serious Man, Fargo, and NCFOM all rank with PTA's best, in my opinion.

I don't know, she was severely out-acted by Streep and P.S. Hoffman in Doubt and still pulled out an Oscar nomination, if I remember correctly.

Seven Psychopaths and Looper both look excellent as well, though maybe not in an Oscar conversation kind of way.

Happy Machine was the first birth scene I thought of when the category was mentioned (along with the Freddie Got Fingered scene, that's a weird combo). I felt so emotionally torn up after my fist viewing that it took me a while to really take the film in. That's an insanely powerful 15 minutes right there.

Does this story have a profound conclusion, or does it just tie everything together nicely?
With lines like the ones in the trailer, this story better enhance my worldview in some considerable way.
