DOHHHHH moment … it's obviously set in the then-present since civilians wouldn't have had air-raid training until the 1940s.

It's been too long since I've seen the movie, which I wasn't overly enamored by versus FALLEN IDOL and THIRD MAN, to remember whether specific signifiers set in the then-present day. And obviously it's always been assumed that "the Organization" is the IRA. But assuming that ODD MAN OUT actually was in fact set in

In addition to the excellent post from Spaniard on the details and subtleties of the historical issues, that can easily get flattened when viewed from other times and places, there are some real theological problems in the ODAN post.

some extra words in there: "If you think that kind of positivistic Humean billiard-ball-hits-billiard-ball type of causation is the primary mechanism of through while social and culture and cultural practices are created and sustained …"

First of all, that Public Enemy are liars is not a matter of what I am free to think — it is a fact.

So … slander ceases to be slander (and grist for public conversation) if other people said it first … got it.

"I never said whether PE were right or wrong with that lyric (and I don't think anything's ever been demonstrated that can paint Elvis as a racist or a bigot towards black people)."

Racists, to the extent they are successful, usually manage to do something that harms black people somehow. Calling Elvis a racist therefore implies he (at least tried to) hurt black people somehow. Like how Bull Connor sicced his dogs or the Klan on them, or stopped them from voting or getting on buses. Stuff like

"I don't understand how calling Elvis a racist jumps to 'who helped/set back black people more, Elvis or Public Enemy'?!?"

No weirder than Public Enemy calling Elvis a "straight-up racist … simple and plain", as they did in "Fight the Power." I don't recall whether that snatch is in DO THE RIGHT THING, though I suspect it's at least in Rosie's opening dance.

Huzzah …. someone finally brought up the relevant point and the one shortcoming I would say about Mike and African cinema (and one I share, I hasten to add).

To maybe contribute to what this post is about …

"under-read …"

"Yeah, and The Grapes of Wrath is a mere thesis novel."

Is WOMAN ON THE BEACH gonna play anywhere outside of New York? I saw it at TIFF06, and it was my favorite of that festival. There isn't even an English-language website for the film.

These two didn't raise a child together.

I guess this movie's too pure-hearted to consider that two attractive, single people who become the most intimate sort of friends could possibly have a romantic or sexual interest in each other.
