And it still feels fresh because he *wasn't* cribbing from Tolkein/D&D like everything else I read in the 80s was.
He was on the cover of the version we had and scared me for years even before I read the books (they were my older sister's, so they were on the bookshelf long before I read them).
Good point about the aging aspect. Taran Wanderer was such a departure from the adventure, swords, and witches stuff in the first three books that it made me feel like a grown-up. It's still my favorite of the series.
I read that not too long ago, also the Ford translation. Man, is there some crazy stuff in there.
