It might have worked if there was some sort of context, that her husband responded to these kinds of hijinks or some old boyfriends - but out of context it was just weird.

Love this show but IMO this is the first episode of the series which seriously lost its balance between realism/surrealism and was just kind of puzzlingly strange.

My assumption was that Maddie did not back out of financing Peter's campaign because she was upset by the rumors in regards to the volunteer - my assumption was Maddie herself paid the volunteer to make false allegations that she and Peter had had an affair. She also may have paid the reporter and/or blogger to run

What most people seem not to understand is that prosecuting the law is not as much about one person's guilt or innocence as it is that being sure that a law or laws are followed to the fullest extent possible.
