Just going by the spanish-speaking comedy shows I see scanning through the  TV channels once in awhile, I would guess that it's the broad-vaudevillian style of many of the black-themed shows that appeals to Brazilians.

I thought the outfits worked well when they were dancing and constantly in motion - but just standing there they looked pretty ridiculous.

I'm by no means an expert but it seems to me MUCH modern dance has what I wouldn't necessarily call 'partnering' but same-sex 'contact'.

Was that really 'ballet'? If so it was not your standard classical ballet. The girl looks like she may be too heavy (not real-life heavy, but 'ballet-heavy' BTW) to do much en pointe work.
