Unfortunately there ARE far too many Americans who don't know the words. Just check YouTube for some famous blunders by big stars who made fools of themselves in front of thousands at the event and millions more watching on TV! No I didn't see it as a joke, rather a sad commentary.

Uhhhhh… You're supposed to be a writer, correct? What happened to subject/verb agreement? Reading this above "…there's counselors.." (there is counselors),  "there's cabins" (there is cabins),  "and there's large-scale events" (there is… events) just made me shudder having taught 36 years in both public and private…

This was a FAMILY camp where the entire FAMILY "camped" and stayed together in cabins for the summer and enjoyed outdoor activities as a FAMILY. Hence, the variety of ages. Were any of you paying attention?  Guess not.
