In the DVD commentary they really loved the whole hard days night bit. I kind of liked it. I don't think it dragged it from the A- to a B that you gave it.

Automatic for the People was the death of what I loved about REM. Going from awkwardly beautiful patchworks of sound with powerfully cryptic lyrics that become rich with meaning after repeated listenings to POP blandness in one album.
