Well, I think a big part of this is discovering new bands, so it's not surprising that some of these are less well known.

Toastpup- haven't read Candy, no.  I have read some of his other books though, and I wouldn't call those subtle either.  His short stories (like The Sun and the Stillborn Stars and You Gotta Leave Your Mark) are a completely different beast, however.  His short stories are definitely his best work.

Re: Terry Southern
That may be somewhat true about his film work (with he exception of Dr. Strangelove of course) but his short stories can be pretty subtle, understated and low key (and excellent).
So, something tells me the self aware cleverness of the films he has written isn't 100 percent his fault.
