Yeah, the line has to be somewhere, and I am pretty confident that it is somewhere ahead of "child rapist". Once an artist cross the line, it becomes both impossible to seperate art and artist, as well as unpleasant and possibly unethical to condone the art by supporting it.

But art is a the product of the person, not some "objective"measure. It is a subjective experience, and knowing about the artist crimes will influence it.

It really depends. You can't really read Ender's Game and not see the horribleness leaking in from Orson Scott Card once you know where he stands. Loved that book as a teen (read it multiple times), reread it after finding out he is an irredeemable asshole, found it very icky.

So you are claiming I must watch his movies, since the reason I haven't watched any of them except Rosemary's Baby is because I dislike the man? Otherwise I am somehow contributing to censorship?

Not sure I trust Stephenson to showcase hopefulness, I have found most of his books to be very dystopian (the Diamond Age, for instance, is just chilling).

Bullshit. There is lots of recognition of well-done, pulpy engineering geared sci-fi. It is just not winning litterary awards, because it is not very well written. Doesn't mean its not a good read.

There was recently a very good article on Slate on this topic, scerwing the anti-GMO lobby for irrational critique of GMOs and abandoning the scientific consensus (as well as commiting fraud) when it does not suit them:

Marriage equality was mostly done through judical fiat by a conservative Supreme Court, which means it was technically always a right accrording to the constitution. This was helped mostly by changing public opinion, not by liberals in power.

The Imperials are space-facists lead by a literal dark wizard. Not sure what nuance you want included, some things are just not shades of gray. Sure, the Republic had its flaws, and the individual Imperial people might be "nice" sometimes, but overall the Emprie as a system of governemtn is horrible. The only places

Me too, loved it. The reviewer seem kind of obsessed with the idea that the flashbacks have to tie strictly into his idea of character development or the current plot, and has to have something "new" to say, while I enjoy them as a a way to show the inmates life outside the prison, to put the too in contrast and get

Exactly. This is why I feel that this season is better than season 2, since this was always the shows greatest strength and they faltered a bit at it in season 2. It is also why I really liked Alex storyline this episode, I like to be reminded that she is an actual drug smuggler form a real cartel, not some part time

Agreed. I loved the Alex flashbacks, but really disliked Piper and her speech this episode. I felt pretty out of synch with the reviewer in this episode.

Jumping directly to antidepressants when you are "depressed" could be very harmful. As the other councillor points out, Soso is in prison; she has a every reason to be sad and might get better with just some support and talk therapy. It might not even be a depression, or at least not one that should be treated with

Your conformation bias is showing….

Its not paranoia when they are actually out to get you, which they pretty clearly are going by their holy writings and the political stance of prominent leaders in their community.

Must all past stories worth telling be relevant for what happens in the present? It is a trend in a lot of OITNB reviews that there must be some kind of "meaning" in the flashbacks, but I often find the flashbacks interesting on their own. Sometimes they are very competent in telling a short story in a few scenes,

Isn' t this the same episode that points out that standards of beauty change by culture and point of view? As is pointed out above, traditional Chinese standards of beauty is not the same as 2015 main stream America standards.

I think the point was that Chang backtracked because she still wants to be liked, even now. The real story was too heavy for the other inmates, most of whom are not really in prison for any kind of violence. Chang has very little in common with any of these women, and that is shown by the flashback.

Here's the deal:
The guy kills himself during a psycotic break. The cops ask around, they find numerous witnesses saying he was taking drugs. Who was selling him drugs? Marisol/Flaca. She claims that the drugs were fake, but to the cops this is just her word vs. the word of all the people that KNOW she was selling

I think the flashbacks are important in this episode. The point isn't to make us feel for Nikki, it is to make us understand her and perhaps dislike her. Most fans love Nikki, we need to be reminded that she is kind of an asshole and she is in prison because of her own actions. Previous flashbacks have painted Nikki
