To be fair, much of what D'Angelo is criticizing are editing decisions more than decisions about where to put the camera.  We don't know how extensive the coverage was on this scene, but I'm sure different options were tested in the editing bay.  That's still on Redford, of course (and his editor, Stu Linder).
