But the show did it with surprisingly self-aware tongue-in-cheek humor.  There's even a later season episode where Cory makes an off-hand comment about how Mr. Feeny taught him in Kindergarten too.

    Amen.

I've been DVRing this show for a few months now — ABC Family airs it for about two hours every morning — and watching it with glee, since I haven't seen most of the episodes since I saw them at first airing.  If you watch some of the mid to later seasons, the show gets quite self-aware, including one episode where

I know!  There was one season where the show had them taking "finals" in an episode airing in March.  I give the show props for actually wanting to advance their characters in age, which they probably did so that the boy would actually "meet world."

As a fellow lover of math, Michael is also my favorite right now.  It's worth noting that he doesn't have to be the best singer in order to win — look at Damien McGinty from last season.

I'm glad you mentioned the "closed-in nature of the sets," Myles, because I've wondered too about the actual time frame of these so called "weeks."  Considering they are using personnel who are heavily involved with the production for Glee (which at least somewhat overlapped with this), they must be filming a lot of

Anyone else notice the brief cameo by Iqbal Theba during the music video?  I unrealistically hope they have him do that every week.

It definitely gets better, including much more "fun."  Give the rest of the first season a try.

So what's up with that photographer fella?  Anyone think he is also a werewolf?  Or is he around just so he can be bitten in the season finale?

I hope they are planning to do more with that gay Danny character this season.  They use him well when they give him something to do, and the actor seems fairly capable.  Scott's sniffing of him while playing lacrosse and his comment, "It's Armani," was a good bit of humor.

On the self-awareness scale, this episode is way higher than the season premiere, which is a good sign.  It seemed to know what it was good at and played to its strengths.
