I'm confused on this, too. I'm hardly a math whiz, but wouldn't any attempt at measuring the dome involve divining the diameter, or at least the radius, thus sending you straight to the middle in the process?

Right there with you, Guy Behind.  I was fifteen, and I remember Arsenio Hall making a joke about it in his monologue later in the week, which made me furious for reasons I couldn't quite define.
