I read a review of Azumanga Daioh that said it's best if you're a few years older than the characters, because that show is all about the nostalgia of one's school years. I agree.

To me, the gold standard for "stories where heroes think their way out solely with the resources at hand, that the audience already knows about" is Die Hard. For which, despite its acclaim as the greatest action movie of all time, it doesn't get enough credit.
