I've thought about this too. The word has two meanings: 1) specific group of people and 2) a generic term for a wanderer. However, other words deemed now unspeakable in polite company, like the n-word, have/had dual meanings as well. I have no idea why gypsy is the exception.

I don't think it's putdown at all. It's definitely an accurate assessment of Scorsese and about 50% of most modern TV/movies if you substitute alcohol for cocaine.

But a lot of the "nerd" comedians still do that. Brian Posehn and Dana Gould are the first two examples I can think of.

He's also marrying a model who happens to be a Hearst. Don't forget that part.
