I agree with you that one mistake doesn't render everything else worthless, but I can see Bryson's point too. One large error could cause one to wonder what other errors might have been made. Still, what do I know? I've never read the book or been to Wigan.
Thank you for the kind words. Bryson's main complaint, as I recall, was that Orwell never finds the pier, and concludes that it's been torn down, when it hadn't been. This leads him to doubt the rest of his reportage.
I found that Three Men and a Boat builds its comedy. Especially as you get to know the protagonists and how completely stupid/helpless they are.
I hope you enjoy Streetcar. It's a classic for a reason. I haven't read Road to Wigan Pier but Bill Bryson had a few negative things to say in one of his books.
