As a somewhat obsessive comic store employee I felt compelled to explain the difference to people often. It was rarely worth doing.

Byrne's Man of Steel may not be canon any more, and it's lustre may have dulled a bit, but it's a perfectly good origin story which introduces Superman in a fairly realistic place. From there one can go to the crazier, mythic science fiction stuff of the Silver Age.
