Wow, easily one of the worst episodes of the show. It's an entire hour of bait-and-switch, promised climax subverted, the boring stuff without the good stuff. If I felt like I trusted the writers to be self-aware about this stuff that would be one thing, but at this point it just feels like they're running around like

I think people are reacting to your read of her initial reaction, which appears to be that it's somehow ridiculous for a 16-year-old kid to react to seeing someone killed before her eyes — by her mother — by being unemotional and more or less fine with it, which strikes me as . . . unrealistic. Among other things.

??????????????????????????????????

Probably at the moment that it strikes them that most of the book stuff has been badly botched for years.

"Miami Vice" is an F- in a career full of D- from Michael Mann.

"Paige, you have to blink. I promise you will feel better if you blink."

Pretty sure he is. I've got one of his Chess sessions on vinyl.

Wait, so, in this review, did William just basically say, "I don't find one of the 2 or 3 fundamental tools in any storyteller's kit interesting"? Because that's what it seemed like. "Dramatic irony" is "cringeworthy"? Yikes. Maybe he just doesn't like stories very much?

I'm wondering if they're gonna show us any of Martha's life in Russia.

AND I have to hang out with my in-laws. Why is this a holiday?

This. Booze is a short-term cure that makes the long-term problem much worse.

Gretchen is really a person who should *not* have a gun.

This is the first time the comparisons to "Lost" have really felt accurate, to me. I really struggled with that show's second season because of exactly the kind of thing that Joshua talks about early in this review. I've come to really like "The Leftovers", but I absolutely expect Kevin to live, and I feel like using

Nirvana was a rich people band? o . . . kay.

Normalcy?

It's based on the stereotype that straight men are clueless about gay men. C'mon, this is the easy shit.

I have to say, I think Gretchen's "irresponsible monster" meltdown was the highlight of my TV month. Maybe my TV year.

Dutch is definitely on his nametag.

Did they not teach you the difference between "that" and "who" when you were a kid?

I'm as liberal as the next guy, but I'm heartily sick of AV Club reviews that consist mostly of the application of a political litmus test to an episode of television.
