I feel like Lot 49 is a primer for the rest of Pynchon (while being excellent of itself as well).  It's short but representative of his tomes.  If you read it and want moar…then you're ready for more Pynchon.

I didn't get across the 100 page threshold of GR until like my fourth or 5th try.  Now it's my favorite novel.  I think @avclub-f688ae53ecd9ab39288ac465aa4f86d8:disqus has it right…just plow through it and trust that at some point it will click (good advice for many pomo novels).  Even before that point, you should be

@Hunsweasel Well despite the success of the HBO show reading fantasy novels in public is still geeky.  Stealth geeks like myself need to keep that on the DL.

It also solves my problem of deciding which of the half dozen books I am currently reading to take with me…now I can take all of them.

That flashback is awesome.  It's the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Iron Council.

I think Mieville's characters are often interesting, but the problem is that his POV/main characters are boring.  The Scar: Bellis was a bore, but Uther Doul, the Lovers, the Brocolac, Hedrigal, and Silas were all interesting.  Iron Council: Ori and Cutter are boring, but Judah, Toro, Spiral Jacobs, etc are much more

Yes his transparent attempts at ingratiation are cringe-worthy.  It's sad to watch grown men do that.  The last show I listened to before dropping it from my regular pod rotation had an excange to the effect of:

Hardwick's laid-back congeniality is a double-edged sword.  I imagine it allows him to land a lot of the interesting guests that so often appear on his show.  However, it also means he rarely has anything interesting to say to them.

Lily is so much worse than anyone else on HIMYM.  Unless it's just "quirky" to rack up mountains of debt w/o your spouse's knowledge, emotionally blackmail him into taking a job to bail you out, and covertly sabotage your friends' relationships.

Kyle Chandler, motherfuckers.

FAIL

YUP.  I would feel like a creep hitting on Annie and Jeff is six years older than me.

Pillows and Blankets was that episode for me.  I know it was mostly liked here, but I thought  it was a perfect example of when the show gets caught up in a Concept and fails to make anything funny or engaging. That and maybe the The Season One finale are the only 2 I would consider disasters, but while  I love

IF/THEN ELSE

YOU LIVED IN NEW YORK?????

This is kind of A Thing in Elmore Leonard fiction though.  Smart criminals and deadly motherfuckers still make dumb mistakes like everyone else.
