@avclub-24f6f7a488efc0455e1cb95aea962bed:disqus , not at all.  That's like saying that pointillism is bad painting because it's a non-realistic visual style.
Filmmaking that's based strongly on conventions is ultimately an aesthetic pursuit. Like other aesthetic arts – such as certain types of figure skating – there

That wouldn't make sense either plot wise or considering Gillan's current career.

They can't open with the sword.  If you analyze the fights by its use of tropes, they quite rigidly followed Tokusatsu conventions, and every time a character broke a convention of a winning fight, (opening with a special attack, showing hubris before battle, etc) they died.

Original franchises too.

Nah, it seems like a good indicator of market interest at a time when studios are becoming increasingly risk averse.

Again, he plainly said 'you're too traumatized' to her, and then the movie added on "he's her father so he's worried about her".  Nothing about why he did not want her to pilot a Jaeger was unclear.

Seriously.  It's a pretty frigging meticulous movie.  People have somehow taken to believing that "simplistic" = "sloppy".

@Scrawler2:disqus , I could easily see GDT deciding to coast off viewer familiarity with the Rinko and Hunnam and use it as an excuse to inject some of his classic character-based stuff into the mix.  He did that with Hellboy and it worked okay.
If GDT wants to go all Cthulu psychotic with a followup movie

He didn't withhold the reason, he withheld the reason he changed his mind.  The reason was that she was frigging traumatized, as demonstrated when she went down the rabbit hole.

Um, no.  She was Russian, and thus far too busy being stoic. Everyone's a trope in this movie remember! (I'm saying that as a good thing).

It also hasn't opened in Brazil, which has the largest population of Japanese expatriates on the planet, which could lead to it getting a fair bit of buzz there as well.

"YEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHH…"
*Puts on Sunglasses*
"….AAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!"

Yup.

I'd still like it to be Jenna Coleman.

@avclub-c701a997d9bef627835b036efb4eca63:disqus , ugh, I don't remember even what it was, but one day I decided to flip through the books at my LCS to see if it got better…  Man, what they did to Xander.
Joss really lost his grip on that guy by the end of the series, and never regained it for the books.

I was always very annoyed at the whole "Buffy died twice" thing.  She died once folks.  No heartbeat =! death.

The Ringer should have put everyone's doubts to rest. People from the Whedonverse should be wary of taking on projects that require them to play multiple characters and revealing their acting weaknesses.

A sentence which would be true for me no matter what movie "that" was referring to.

Carol Danvers is the exact opposite of Petite.

I agree with your analysis of the story, but I don't think it's relevant to a sequel.
I'd rather take the chance on getting an awesome second movie that might suck, than have no movie and thus no chance of any awesome second movie. A shitty second movie doesn't reflect poorly on the original if the original is as
