More than any band, I wish Love Psychedelico were a household name. In their native Japan, they're still putting out albums and are still pretty popular, but not as huge as they were when they debuted in 2000. Their sound owes a direct debt to '60s and '70s classic rock and folk, and contemporary rock and pop (lead…
They quit Build-A-Title prematurely in the Mirman/Tompkins/Metzger/Jordan DLM. I strung this together in my head while listening as they moved on to the Leondard Maltin Game.
What was your entry? Mine was "mohawk."
The cookie stand is upstairs, the food court is downstairs — it's not like we're talking quantum physics here!
Replace R.E.M. with Beck
Replace R.E.M. with Beck, and the first paragraph is pretty much me from age 17 through two weekends ago when I went to a new/used record store in Tokyo and bought nine "Mellow Gold" through "Midnite Vultures"-era maxi CD singles in one fell swoop. This spree inspired me to come home and order…
The Glamorous Life of Jessica Biel?
Hey! The A.V. Club reviewed a Japanese pink eiga film a few years back that shares the gruesome-head-injury-results-in-woman's-increased-sexual-desire plot of this movie! I wonder if Jessica Biel will be sexually assaulted by the cloned, sentient finger of George W. Bush like…
I have all of Utada Hikaru's studio albums, both Japanese- and English-language. Only a few singles, though (the B-sides are mostly club remixes and instrumental-only versions.)
Forgot to mention Love Psychedelico's U.S. compilation album, "This is Love Psychedelico," of which I have two versions: an autographed U.S. version, and the Japanese version with two bonus tracks.
The 12th season seemed a lot better in retrospect after watching the 20th. There were still some great episodes back then.
SimpsonBeckDelico
I will continue to purchase all of the "Simpsons" complete-season DVD sets, even though the most recent 20th season elicited exactly two laughs from me (both during the "Treehouse of Horror" episode).
@cybersybil: Hey, now. My wife makes damn good okonomiyaki. Put a little mayonnaise and tonkatsu sauce on top … that's good eatin'.
A Sbarro's *inside* an Arby's? That's like, the complete opposite of lobsters stuffed with tacos. Did they offer a Sbarro's calzone stuffed with an Arby's Beef 'n Cheddar?
@Rodney: There is no Pizza Hut near where I live in Sagamihara, and I've never ordered from the nearby Domino's. I sometimes get a craving for Papa John's, but then I say "Fuck pizza!" and get 30 gyoza for 1,200 yen from this awesome place near the train station and bring it home. That and some steamed rice is the…
@i and 1: Yeah, depending on the chain, a "large" will run you anywhere between $20 to $26. But Japan's idea of a large pizza is its same as a large T-shirt (or anything else), i.e. noticeably smaller than what most everyone else considers to be large. But like I said, I haven't eaten pizza from a Japanese delivery…
Papa John's?
I grew up in Texas, and thus never had access to world-renowned pizza (like from Chicago or New York), or even pretty-OK local pizza. The "authentic" Italian places in my hometown served pizza that was all about the overly chewy crust, thin sauce, and rubbery cheese.
I remember when Rabin did back-to-back MYOF entries for "Dirty Work" and "Brain Candy," naming them both Secret Successes. Glorious. Then when I read all the praise for the flicks from A.V. Club commentors, that was the icing on the cake.
Mendooooooooooooza!!!
Three movies
1. Dirty Work
2. Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy
3. Very Bad Things
I'm of course psyched for the new album, and I hope you dig it if you do end up buying it. Delico has a very sunny, classic rock sound and are miles away from the typical J-Pop groups and solo artists. They have an very John Lennon-esque "peace and love" vibe to their songs, and when I interviewed them they told me…
