"A dog's got personality." I think that's it, honestly - we don't eat dogs because we see them as being closer to human. The thought of eating dog meat makes me sick, especially since I got a puppy last year, but I don't think I can object to it morally as long as I still eat pig.

It's probably more of a knee-jerk reaction because so many of the jokes do veer into racism. Plus there's Morrissey's "subspecies" comment from a few years ago.
