I will chime in as someone who hates it.  I read a lot, and it is the only book I started and then put down in disgust without finishing it, maybe ever.

The difference is that walking requires input from the player.  If I don't tell Link to move in Link to the Past, nothing happens.  If you can literally leave the room to get a snack while your character crosses the map (which I frequently did while playing Wind Waker), the designers have chosen to waste the player's

The boat isn't just a way to get around.  There were disappointingly few dungeons in Wind Waker, and a very large chunk of the game involved bobbing around in the ocean looking for treasure chests.

A lot of people who were grown ups during the PS1/N64 era talked a LOT about how much uglier the first generation 3D games were in comparison to 2D games.  People I knew were kind of forgiving of OoT, but everyone shit all over FFVII.

And it was awesome.

I'm not saying it was good.  I'm just saying that The Office has a long history of not being funny.
