Old Yeller.
Old Yeller.
It was basically a cheap, crappy teen sexploitation flick. So it doesn't really rate a mention here. The ending was a bit of a surprise, but back then there were a bunch of movies trying for abortion and relationship realism (Fast Times, The Teacher). Still, I don't think I can consider a naive teen getting…
I'm old enough to remember it, and felt the same way about it then. It's not that great a song. Always felt like a Harry Chapin ripoff to me.
The main problem I had with this episode was that I didn't understand what made some teams so far behind other teams. There was no challenge where you could see teams pulling ahead or falling behind. The gay couple seemed to be somewhat slow in the cave (tho it's not clear why - the rope ladder?), but what about the…
That article is interesting, but it also raises a number of questions.
Babies on Friends were strange creatures. They had a way of disappearing. Ross's kid would show up about once every season for a labored Ross-centric plot. Phoebe had triplets who were promptly disappeared. And Rachel… well, I had stopped watching by that point.
Favorite Times Square movie experience
"48 hrs."
This is fucking annoying
I can't believe I am going to defend a pop trifle, but Hey Soul Sister is a fine song, and I can't for the life of me understand what has enraged Rabin about it. Come on, Rabin. Are you such a hip-hop poser that you've lost all sense of humor? I never paid attention to the song's bridge…
Also, Take me home, country roads.
Child of the 70s with older siblings
So, pretty much any song from the Beatle's blue or red albums, which were played non-stop in our house.
"songs that are short catchy and have a good beat" = almost every Lindsey Buckingham song. Too bad they all sound the same, but they're fun.
I read some of it in college when it was reprinted. Yeah, it's worth reading because it's sometimes fun and opens a window onto the 60s, but it's amazingly dated, and Ellison is insufferable.
Larry Sanders and HBO
The Larry Sanders Show was the best thing to happen to HBO in the 90's. Fact is, there wasn't all that much else to watch on HBO. They would replay the same second-run movies a hundred times a week. They did have some good boxing and sometimes the stand-up specials were good, but what kept me…
Definitely true. Dream On would appear in various places (syndication, airplanes, hotels) with the R-rated stuff missing (or maybe reshot?), and the show still felt smooth. Too bad it was boring and unfunny. Larry Sanders was easily the best comedy series HBO made in that era.
Seinfeld's Aunt Manya, for one.
Yeah, that "Prediction" line is good. One of the few good things in a messy, boring episode. Another good thing: Jerry and Elaine acting sympathetic and surprised when Kramer breaks up with the girl for the second time.
Yeah, that album has a few joyful mass-murders. The Curse of Millhaven and the Omalley's Bar are very similar in attitude. Stagger Lee is a particularly vicious take on a classic song, but not so cheery.
Poltergeist
I can't possibly read through 7 pages of comments, and a quick search shows me that people have already mentioned Poltergeist, but I am also going to have to mention it.
1984 was never meant to be "realistic". Everything in it is symbolic of political/social ideas. Exaggerated to ridiculous extremes, it is meant to make the reader think about certain issues.
Very Generous
Look, I love these episodes. They are among the first Seinfelds I saw, so I always will have a special place in my heart for them.
