@avclub-b4238f7793ec8c1a632f14f2a1766c68:disqus : I like to point out to conspiratorial types that any government that could pull off a plot like that would probably kill anyone who told the truth about it. In a world where the WTC/Washington attacks were government actions, the makers of "Loose Change" would have

It's okay, though. Quoting from the Junod piece:
"Then the car stopped on Thirty-fourth Street, in front of the escalators leading
down to the station, and when the doors opened—
'Holy shit! It's Mister Fucking Rogers!'

Classic example: Martin Francisco Duran, who used a semi-automatic assault rifle to spray bullets at the White House in a bizarre attempt to kill President Clinton. As soon as he stopped to reload, he was tackled by bystanders. The smaller the clip, the sooner this can happen.

The "Californian" was not sighted until about that time; while the "Titanic" was visible from the "Californian" even before the collision, being a massive liner lit from stem to stern, the "Californian" had

Nothing wrong with putting things into a context that kids will better understand, since most of them don't know a thing about mid-nineteenth-century pop culture.

Ike is certainly a Republican, as per "About Last Night," albeit a Republican who watches PBS.

I can understand your not wishing to see them yourself. I hope you aren't suggesting that 9/11 movies shouldn't be made, though. Every tragic event that's ever been made into a film is "fake drama" about something that was "fucking frightening." If we didn't make movies like that, we'd lose "Pearl Harbor" and "J.F.K."

Not as stubborn as conspiracy-minded lunatics, apparently.

What idiot suggested that? The iceberg was probably at least a mile away, out of sight to the ship's stern. The ship's engines were irreversibly dead within thirty minutes of the collision, when they shut down the boilers to prevent steam explosions.

Actually, being on the "Empress" wouldn't have been so bad, comparatively. The impact was gentle, so many people didn't react (or even wake) quickly, and she sank in just fourteen minutes. A number of passengers were drowned in their beds.

I don't know about that…in the Midwest, cot is pronounced with an "ah" sort of sound (I'm sorry, I don't know IPA symbols), and caught with an "aw".

I respect your comments greatly, alurin, but I won't have that. Best Trek book: "Dark Mirror."
