For fear of reading too much into the episode, the guys reaction to the gay couple was actually critical of TV in general.  They were generally fine with them, at times uncomfortable when they showed too much affection, but ultimately overly accepting when they figured there was a dollar to be made… just like TV

The titular mother will actually turn out to be the runaway teenager who had her baby stolen by Ted who grew into the older sibling.  It will take another 9 years for him to reveal the mother of the younger sibling.

I think it's easier to find reruns, especially on local channels, of older sitcoms.  What is harder to find are the variety shows that ruled tv for so long.  No one reruns those anymore and there really isn't much of a nostalgic call for them.
