NYC Ghosts and Flowers isn't a stinker. It's patchy but it's highlights are absolutely awesome. I think that one Pitchfork review put it in everyone's mind that Thurston and Lee channeling beat poets was corny rather letting people make up their own mind. The title track is phenomenal.
