Yeah, it never fails to amuse me how segments of the modern right are small government and pro-colonialist. You can't be both!

The British Observer columnist Andrew Anthony did the same thing for the same reasons. It's genuinely impossible for me to respect someone who changes their entire philosophy based on something so unimportant in the grand scheme of things.
Yeah, it seems to be more a case of misapplied intelligence than stupidity. When Glenn Beck was at his peak I thought it was sad that he was reaching to an audience who clearly wanted some sort of explanation and background to the crises in the world today, and rather than getting something that might answer their…
It's always interesting when modern conservatives like Frank Miller pine for the glory days of World War II propaganda. Looking at some of those old 1940s comics, films and radio shows and comparing them to the likes of Holy Terror (or the sentiments on your average rightblog), the thing that strikes you is that…
Huh. 'The Rape Over' seems somehow even more dubious in light of this.
But he's paying homage to the mighty, heterosexual texts of Homer and Proust! You can't make a space for any fairy shit in their writing!
…and that's why we should be better than that. You can't just go around acting like Seth McFarlane.
I remember a lot of earnest articles about whether people would ever watch violent action movies again, which is hilarious when you consider the real effect of 9/11 on Hollywood blockbusters is giving them some new visuals to imitate.
My favourite thing about the controlled demolition theory is how proponents of it act like they're the serious, scientific wing of 9/11 truth, despite the fact that they're proposing a building was wired for demolition using cables that still worked after two fucking passenger jets slammed into the buildings. I'd…
Shayler comes from my home town, and when he decided he was the Messiah he came back here to preach a Sermon on the Mount on a nearby hill. He also said he used his divine powers to help our football team win matches, a claim which is enough to discredit any idea that he might be a supernatural being right there and…
She seems like kind of a milquetoast person to hate that much.
The rare mention of American Psycho 2 allows me the opportunity to point out that its director gives the most delightfully delusional interviews I've ever read: http://www.joblo.com/arrow/…
The greatest TV edit ever is still Repo Man, supervised by Alex Cox in mercurial piss-taking mode. "Fun you, melon farmer!"
Batmensch.
Really? I'd say Palahniuk, for all his sins, is much more tongue-in-cheek than Amis, whose fiction has spent about two decades now hopping from historic tragedy to historic tragedy in the vain hope that some of the gravitas will rub off.
Weirdly, I was just talking to a friend about the possibility that Michael Fassbender and Benedict Cumberbatch would star in so many movies they would eventually blur into one actor, called Michaedict Cumberbender.
@avclub-b750f74544cb00c138079607276995e9:disqus I don't know what the critics and public at large thought, but Patricia Highsmith never liked Dennis Hopper's performance in that movie. According to Andrew Wilson's biography of her, she did eventually warm up to the movie as a whole, and even sent Wim Wenders a letter…
Hepburn as Holly Golightly is an interesting one, because you can still kind of see what Capote's objection was - she's too squeaky-clean for the book's character - but people loved it, and it works on its own terms in the movie.
I loved that. They got a legitimately great actor to play a piffling role in a sequel to a completely forgettable movie, and they still found a way to bitch about it.
Paul Schrader has a great Jon Peters story too; he hired Schrader to adapt a book he bought about how the feds caught John Gotti, and Schrader did a ton of research hanging out with cops and FBI agents to make sure all the depictions of wiretapping etc. were accurate. When he handed the script in, Peters was furious.…
