I kinda' like Lydia. I love how she asks for weird tea at roadside diners and doesn't even contemplate the idea of not being fancy and rich. She sucks, but I like her.

I think it would have meant less. The cold open made the kid seem more real; he's out collecting critters and having a fun time by himself, which is something a lot of clever introverted kids do. I'm not sure there's a lot of symbolism in the spider. It reminded me that this kid is just out harmlessly collecting critters, something lots of kids do. I used to do that at my brother's baseball games when I was a kid. He's out being free. Having a blast.
