Procol Harum's first album has some really blatant references to classical music (they quote Bach a few times), but Shine On Brightly has the first piece of rock music broken into several movements ("In Held 'Twas in I"). I'd say it starts there.

@Dikachu:disqus Next time I end up telling that story around a bunch of prog-informed people I'll end it like that.

Does nobody understand that @avclub-e1e84d33778737c0a16ede94d51f3752:disqus doesn't actually think that My Bloody Valentine and My Chemical Romance are the same kind of band, and they just have similar names?

Neither do I, though apart from Red you could make a case either way for any of those.

I always thought a show about colonists (not just the Maquis) in the Star Trek universe would have been interesting. There are all these colonies out there, but why? What are they doing? What do they have to gain by living in these terrible places?

You touch on a pretty interesting point there. The Ferengi were initially supposed to be the arch villains of the TNG universe (That is SO Gene Roddenberry to make a capitalism the enemy of the humanity); but like you say, it's hard to see how a Ferengi society would function.

While I love the idea of the Rock in Opposition movement – I wrote a big undergrad paper on the use of the electric guitar as a vehicle for social commentary during Thatcher's first term as PM, so I'm a real sucker for this crap – I find most of the music unlistenable.
