While I love the idea of the Rock in Opposition movement – I wrote a big undergrad paper on the use of the electric guitar as a vehicle for social commentary during Thatcher's first term as PM, so I'm a real sucker for this crap – I find most of the music unlistenable.

The main thing to remember about 24th Century youtube is that you NEVER turn off the safety protocols.

I've heard some Gentle Giant live recordings and you're right, it's excellent. "Playing the Game" was a great song live.

It's a pretty great track, but apart from that, "Deborah Harry," "Film Music," and "Savoir Faire," I find them to be pretty unlistenable. Still, four good tracks is better than none, right? They probably don't deserve to be lumped in with Etron Fou Leloublan.

I named my first car Tarkus (it was a '92 Ford Taurus wagon). Old girl was a warrior. Sadly she met her manticore when the transmission exploded.

I'm not really surprised they didn't get a mention, but I'd have liked to see a mention of This Heat. They blended into postpunk, but they were around in 1976. "Makeshift Swahili" and "Cenotaph" are prog as fuck. Hell of a band.

Y'know, I've never gotten through a Soft Machine album, but I love the hell out of Robert Wyatt's solo work. I'm a real sucker for everything he did, even if it kinda' sucks (Dondestan and Old Rottenhat have their moments).  Greatest voice in pop music.

@avclub-1d9611114f69a2af507810370562ccd6:disqus So is this, like, some black belt irony or something? Work in a few quotes from A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man or link me to a youtube video of Cecil Taylor so I can listen while I read. At least make it obvious, otherwise you sound like a dickbag.
