So can I still like Nymphomaniac? Or are we entering Woody Allen territory?

I think you’re missing the point of what makes Metacritic good. If I don’t want to read a review to decide if I want to see a film, but I want to find out whether people loved the film or not, then Metacritic is very helpful. A 60% where everyone is middling is very different than a 60% where some people really loved…
With a worse UI though. Scrolling through the short blurbs on Metacritic is much easier and more intuitive than on RottenTomatoes. The whole site is pretty ugly for that matter. Metacritic is much cleaner, and it is much easier to find publications or authors I am looking for.
Right. And if this were 100 years ago we could say the same about Britain, France, and Germany. Until World War I, Britain and France were on the opposite side of pretty much every conflict. World War I partly happened under the assumption that Britain and France would never ally so Prussia could do whatever the fuck…
Why is it that every Mad Men style show I see in trailers looks so incredibly clean, like the entire thing is CGI? Mad Men had bright colors and a certain fashion sense and smoking, sure, but it didn’t look as clean as all of these shows. In case it isn’t clear, I am using clean in a negative sense.
I don’t understand the idea that the losing side in a civil war should be honored at all. I don’t see why it matters how wealthy their ancestors were. Their side lost. They don’t get to have monuments commemorating their treason.
I find this to be true of most online conversations. I get “look it up yourself” more from people making a liberal identity politics statement than I do any other group, but that’s mostly because I don’t engage Trump supporters. Most people are loathe to cite sources, and they find the idea that they should appalling.
A better question might be even knowing that a fringe has co-opted it, why should they care? The Matrix is more popular than the red pill subreddit. Why let them take control of the term by never doing anything unrelated with it every again? To let them decide what you name your album is to give their name power.
Mine too! It’s gorgeous. Especially the cloud sequence. It has this melancholy touch that I never expected in a Miyazaki film.
In both The Wind Rises and Howl’s Moving Castle they are young adults, early 20s I would say. I guess in Wind Rises we see the character through multiple stages of adulthood. But Porco’s age is contrasted with Curtis’s youth in a way that defines it more. His pigness emphasizes his middle age even more, as if he has a…
It does actually!
I’d put in Mushishi over Kino’s Journey, but otherwise pretty good list. Although, most of them probably wouldn’t work for Sean.
His fighting style is supposed to be based on Bruce Lee and his martial art Jeet Kune Do. I think the water line is an indirect quote from a description Bruce Lee once gave.
Watch it in Japanese with subtitles. It’ll feel less stilted. It’s like any other foreign work. It works better with the original cast.
Beck was, like most anime, originally a manga and the story goes much further than the festival performance. I thought it was great, but you can kind of guess the trajectory that they become world famous artists. Anyways, if you liked the show, check the manga if you want more of the story.
One of my favorites, but a difficult recommendation. All of the villagers start looking the same after a few episodes, and it is slow. I think it’s perfect, but I can see a lot of people getting bored of it.
The Ghost in the Shell TV show was in the 2000s.
Sub over dub of course, but I also think Porco Rosso is not only the best Ghibli, but the best recommendation for adults getting into anime. It’s the only one with an adult lead, and that does make a difference in its style.
Alright Sean, I’m not sure if you’ll read this but I think I have an idea of where your tastes might lie and you can double check this with Clayton. I have some recommendations for you:
I assume I am one of these people you are referring to. I went over more specific defenses in a different subthread.
