Top Chef basically wants us to talk about how crazy their challenges are in this "wow, these chefs are really talented because they did this" way, when we're actually thinking, "wow, Bravo producers are really gunning to be the Amazing Race."

I completely agree with you, and am similarly stunned that this episode received positive reviews. I am also a huge Misfits fan that was completely thrown off by this.
