The book is really worth the read. Wouk's own Naval service really informs the novel and makes it realistic in many facets that don't show through in the film.

There always seems to be that handful of guys who get promoted to that one step above their maximum proficiency.

The romance was adapted so poorly from the book that all nuance and effect was lost. Robert Francis' block-of-wood performance is mostly to blame but the movie couldn't keep even half of the accompanying book backstory that would have made it more integral to the story.

I don't think Queeg is a bad guy in either the book or the movie - just tremendously insecure and a guy promoted one step too far for his ability.
