American Beauty is great when it sticks to mean-spirited comedy.  Its attempts at profundity were embarassing.  Even at 18 I was rolling my eyes at the beauty-of-the-blowing-plastic-bag stuff.  Still doesn't deserve all the scorn it has gotten, though.
