Sato is 50 according to the Nick site, so he would have been 8. I actually enjoyed the immediate parental vibe between Sato and Mako, which I thought was sweet and sincere and said a lot about both characters. Mako's been playing dad to his brother since he was 8. He himself is clearly in desperate need of a father

I did not make that connection, but Korra whipping her around with Earthbending was pretty awesome.

So, here is my Legend of Korra drinking game:

I thought that was weird too, but I've learned not to get all hung up on wardrobe in a cartoon. Recall that not one member of Tenzin's family was wearing so much as an overcoat when they visited the fucking South Pole (see also: Aang in Siege of the North). The number of costume changes we see in any given episode,

That's what I was thinking as well. That would put Bolin at around Korra's age exactly, which feels about right.

This doesn't seem to be the prevailing opinion, but I actually think Asami is precisely as she seems: privileged but sincere and gracious. Aside from the gaps in her father's back story, I don't see any reason to mistrust her, at least not yet. The fact that she's a huge pro-bending fan seems to preclude any notion

Yep. The fact that Aang was the Avatar meant precisely dick to Toph when they first met.

Korra's response to Asami was icy but understandable given everything that was being thrown at her in that moment. I think she's got the hots for Mako, but she's not really acknowledging it to herself, and she probably doesn't even have time to think about it. She's got other shit going on. That gives me hope that

This was definitely the wrong week to dip into the Korra tags on Tumblr. That shit was bananas. Two pics and it's like LOAD THE CANNONS MOTHERFUCKERS. THE SHIP WARS ARE FUCKING ON.

That was fucking adorable. I was backing Koko/Makorra all the way last week, and now I might have to jump ship. She seems kind of oblivious though, not without reason.

Correct, @sarapen:disqus . Aang's home base was the Southern Temple, but we have a flashback of him at the Eastern Temple when he's picking out Appa as his companion.

It certainly feels like they're applying the HBO/AMC formula for heavy serialization here rather than the episodic format used in TLA. It makes sense. Serialization is very much en vogue right now, and I'm enjoying seeing it used on a kid's show. I just feel like the episodes need to be about ten minutes longer if not

What @avclub-1ff70043c78f44fc8841bd8203c00ed3:disqus said. Whether or not we can classify their aims as genocide, Equalist rhetoric is eliminationist in the extreme. The Protestor's schtick about "taking this city back" is straight from the extremist playbook. It's ahistorical (wasn't the city founded by BOTH benders

All good points, but let's not assume that the average citizenry of Republic City is monolithic. While their are issues of differential privilege/empowerment at work here, we've seen non-benders in positions of privilege (the Satos) and benders just barely scratching by (Fire Ferrets, celebrity notwithstanding…they're

I got chills when she whispered "Aang" as Tenzin came striding in to rescue her.

I was sooooo worried about Asami when I saw the development art for her, but I should trust Bryke more. The last thing I want to see in Avatar some kind of tomboy/hot chick rivalry (romantic or otherwise), but that doesn't seem to be where we're headed, Korra's snarky line notwithstanding.

I think the fact that she's out of sync with her native element is actually a really interesting and compelling part of her character. It's emblematic of the multiple ways in which she just can't seem to fit into this new world, but to me it's also of a piece with the multi-culturalism of Republic City.

Korra and Tenzin's relationship forms the emotional core of this show. I just love it.

Just posting to gripe about the fact that this isn't up on the Nick site yet. Heaven forfend I should resort to illegal means…

Posting on a thread about a Nickelodeon cartoon (even a ridiculously excellent one) requires you to abandon prevailing standards of "coolness," whereas the conversations revolving around "hip" music seem to inevitably devolve into "more indie than thou" poserism.
