What @avclub-20d4c2d722de8dd0f1ec4e055d9b639e:disqus said. I have no problem with them in theory, but the on-screen chemistry just wasn't there. We only ever get the subtlest hints that Katara reciprocates and so the kiss feels less like something both characters have been building toward than like Katara is Aang's

Which, of course, leaves the door open for more seasons, I think. This sounds like the Buffy approach.

It makes sense that a good portion of this commentariat would have advanced degrees in the humanities, as we tend to be verbose and underemployed.

You will be pleased to know that someone made a gif of this for you (and it wasn't me):

Leonard likes this post.

Plus, one of the things that Avatar does so well and that I wouldn't trade for anything is capture the wonder of childhood and adolescence as liminal periods of discovery and magic without ever pretending like those stages of life are unproblematic. The young characters are agents, not victims, and seeing the world

I never thought about this, but you're right. My favorite characters in ensemble shows tend to be Peggy and Joan over Don, Jesse over Walt. I'm in love with Korra so far though. I wish she'd been around when I was a kid.

Very well said. I get the feeling that a few adult viewers would prefer if Avatar really was some gritty HBO or AMC show, and those opinions become particularly pronounced in discussions of the finale, where many seem to think that the ending should have been darker and required more of a moral compromise from Aang. De-ontological ethics ftw.

Yeah. I am way more excited about the thematic stuff, as 99% of my commenting here should indicate. But the fact of the matter is that the possible canonical romances here are way less ick than they were in TLA, so I can appreciate them more.

The Nick site is obnoxious, but that map is worth a look. It's gorgeous and succinctly fleshes out some of the backstory.

But it's better than some farcical aquatic ceremony in which some watery tart lobs a sword at you.

I do like that they show Mako to be a big dork, since he's mostly characterized as a whole bag of dicks at this point.

You're the Blue Spirit!

FWIW, the Korra thread posted on Friday seemed to stay pretty active throughout the weekend. I guess that's where the Saturday timeslot helps.

Did ya'll see this?

The Kyoshi/Dai Li thing is canon. It was revealed in the little "Spirit World" game on Nick that bridged Seasons 2 and 3. You can see a summary (and screenies) on the Avatar wiki.

I hear you. There really is no explanation offered, but for whatever reason, it just doesn't bother me that much. The emotional/character beats felt right to me.
