The extended bit with Sam and the stuffed animals in "Power Play" kills me, particularly that last moment where he glances out the window and says, "Oh yeah, they're miles apart."

There are gay characters in the comic. The group simply hasn't run into them yet.  As previously stated, the show follows a rough outline/timeline of the comic.  Assuming it's continued success and ongoing renewal, they'll get there.
