On the West Coast, it's the eastern part of states that are horrifying. Eastern Washington and Eastern Oregon are deep red havens for yokels. Eastern California (ie: Bakersfield, so really…southeastern) is pure sadness.

It is very, very real. I got a jaywalking ticket in downtown Seattle two years ago.
