While an interesting article, it can sometimes lead to unfortunate results when a pop culture critic makes sweeping statements about a major jazz artist, being possibly unfamiliar with the totality of his/her career. You will be hard-pressed to find a single credible musician or writer who has heard most of Hancock's…
I think the actual song has merits as a song, though a lot of folks hear lyrics first - and I'd agree it's not great lyrical poetry. The melody and structure has something organic and lovely underneath and my favourite contemporary instrumentalist - Brad Mehldau - agrees, and uses it as a beautiful point of departure…
Unless I am missing something, there isn't a single film in the top 50, the list of movies that were deemed close-but-no-cigar (ie. Heat), or in these outliers that depict life in (then) present-day black America. This, despite a decade that included Boyz n the Hood (one of the consensus movies of the decade by…

Wait, I pointed out how Silence of the Lambs not being in the top 50 was a head-scratcher, but what about Boyz n the Hood (1991)? Yikes. That movies is 96 on Rotten Tomatoes and 100 (!) from top critics. Is the view that it doesn't hold up? And there isn't a lot of movies on this list (if any) that are by black…

All of the other omissions that people have mentioned regularly, I get. Few critics are passionate about populist films like J.Park or Shawshank (though trending positive) and Casino has a lot of detractors (though big advocates too).

I meant to state "the a/v club doesn't see fit to list a…" in my previous post.
No live action comedy-comedies
Despite including a handful of bittersweet movies that are funny at times like Tenenbaums, etc., the A/V Club sees fit to list a single live action film which is primarily comedic. Unbalanced, no?
Marc Maron
All of his albums should be considered. His most recent - Final Engagement - is brilliant. He is widely respected and very influential. I think it's a big mistake not to have him on this list.
