It's funny, King famously hated The Shining and said it was the worst of his movie adaptations. I love his books but he really should be kept away from his movies.

I'm not sure they were meant to be a major influence in the year the show took place. People speak Chinese; we speak English but England hasn't been a major power for about a hundred years. Maybe Joss/whoever has said otherwise in interviews, but as far as the canon show, it's simply never mentioned.
