The Straight Up cut made me miss a lot of the humor in the theatrical cut. Not that Westlake's original book has a lot of humor, but some of it worked quite well in the film (and some of it didn't).

True. I also have to say Kennedy was pretty good for his role in Scream and Scream 2. That character needed to be irritating and he brought it in spades. Typecasting to be sure.

Return to Oz was based in part on Ozma of Oz as well as The Marvelous Land of Oz. The director got the tone of the books exactly right. I don't think you could ever ask for a better adaptation of Baum's works than Return to Oz.

I read the shit out of the books. I also read a bunch of comics that had a dark, adult take on Baum's material. I seem to remember one about the Tin Man killing some rapist with an ax, or maybe I made that up…?
