I like SPEED RACER a lot too. Picture the best and the worst of all three MATRIX films, plus a bit of SPEED RACER, and that's CLOUD ATLAS. Some wonderful eye-candy, with a not very convincing "but this is all meaningful" tacked on.

I just find it overstated and wheel-spinning. The father's comments are welcome, but I think he could've asked her what the movie's about, heard her hemming/hawing response, and then delivered the same comment just as well.

He's really good in this too. It's a complicated role, and he humanizes it beautifully. (Maybe too much; he's far more sympathetic than the two lovers.)
