I watched that year too. As I recall, the suitcase bit was a piece of avant-garde theater, perhaps even written by (or referencing) some playwright. But it's all hazy.

Argh. What's even more frustrating is that I was looking directly at the right name when I typed the wrong one. I'll try to get it fixed.

Agreed, Jason. Some of it may just be fond memories of childhood, but the 84-85 season had a "we know what we're doing" quality — as well as a sense of playfulness, largely coming from Crystal — that was completely unlike the early '80s, when really only Murphy and Piscopo seemed comfortable.

I very much enjoyed TOWER HEIST, which takes a while to get going and is kind of ridiculous down the stretch, but it genuinely hilarious in its middle hour. And Murphy is terrific in it. I think he's just not always in tune with what his fans want to see from him, or where his strengths lie as a performer at this

By the way, the episode available (in truncated form) on Hulu and Netflix, but we pull our clips from DVDs, and only selected sketches are available on SNL's "Best Of Eddie Murphy" disc. (And as you may have noticed, I had to dig a bit to find a Honeymooners clip from this episode.) Anyway, I urge people with Hulu

H8R is an interesting counter-example. I never watched that particular show, but there's a ton of reality TV (not all, but most) that I can't stand, bordering on hate. On the other hand, without those shows I wouldn't have THE SOUP, which I enjoy. On the other other hand, perhaps enjoying THE SOUP is tantamount to

I live in SEC country. During football season we all hate each other.

Just soccer and little league, in an organized fashion. Then pick-up games in college, that kind of thing. And now some sports with my kids, but I feel bad telling them how much they suck.

Well, technically it's Bennie Benjamin, Gloria Caldwell and Sol Marcus' "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." I know they wrote it for Simone, but The Animals' version is the best known. (You're right that they probably don't merit a possessive there, though.)

Anne, we can't nest beyond a certain point. It sucks, but I've gotten used to working within those parameters.
