I would love if the director with two in the top ten is Linklater. Both of those movies deserve to be in the top 50, and they might just end up on this top 10, but I kind of doubt Linklater is a consensus choice among AV Club writers. That said, I would personally make the case he is more deserving than either

Sorry, I'm a bit touchy about Ford.

Pretty sure it was on their best of the aughts list

I'm sorry, but the Big Lebowski would be considered great based on just it's script and structure, add amazing direction and performance on top of it, and you really could not be more wrong.

Wow, way to miss the point of that portrayal. Ford and Wayne's portrayal of that racism was meant as a portrayal of what that era actually looked like, and also is meant to complicate Wayne's hero, and really pushed him towards explicit antihero status. Huge steps for both Ford and Wayne.

I would be stunned, but also immensely pleased. I've probably seen Jurassic Park once every 5 years or so since it came out, and each time am impressed by how well it holds up. While not particularly intellectually stimulating, it married cutting-edge CGI to story and craft in a way that puts things like Avatar to

Agree with all that American Beauty really does not deserve a spot on this list. Its tales of suburban middle-aged ennui have been told much more effectually by other films.

That said, I do think that in general it is true that Spielberg is often more simplistic, or really more accessible than other filmmakers. However, I wouldn't say that is inherently a negative thing, any more than I would say inaccessible work is a negative thing. I said above, and I'll say it again: there is no

Flagged for use of term "flyover states." Not really, but seriously, you know you are commenting on a site that is based in the midwest, right?

I for one would have no problem with Unforgiven as number 1, especially since it won't be Fargo.
