Oregon alum here. The same thing happens on campus with Animal House. Whenever it was on TV kids would gather in a room and point out the buildings they recognized.
The big story in metal for 2012 was how prolific of a year
it was for doom, but I honestly found most of the releases in the genre pretty
boring. Aldebaran and Evoken’s records were both vastly overrated and
Serpentine Path’s debut was a total snoozefest considering the résumés of its
members. Only Pallbearer and Bell…

Now that hook is stuck in my head. Bun-nuh-nuh-NUH-NUH-NUH “Kiss

I was hoping he would at least still write lyrics, but the guys told me he's out of the band completely. Metal, and American music in general, just lost one of its best lyricists. They're really great dudes and fantastic musicians and I hope they find someone new and soldier on with the proggy/blackened goodness.

To preface this, I count Cormorant's Dwellings as a 2012 release because that is when it made its true impact, but the site I write for disagrees. It is my true favorite of the year. The album that took its place is more than worthy:

You could track my progression through heavier sounds by looking at the Arden store's sales from late '05 through summer '06. Since they only had one of each copy of any given Florida death metal band, the inventory is pretty much Sumerian-core and a few Relapse bands, but I buy vinyl now and there are some great…

There's been a connection between HH and PL since Chris Bruni issues Isis' live albums on vinyl like seven years ago. In retrospect, though, Torche's and Pelican's jump from the label are much more understandable.

If you're the one responsible for stocking Jesu and various other HH artists in the Metal section at the Arden location, thank you for making winter break '05 of my freshman year of college a time of great music discoveries.
