I did the straight up de-convert (born into Christian family, held on tight until 16, gave it all up on a single day), and I can attest to a similar feeling of deep, oddly world-shattering calm - or "tragic and liberating" as the author describes.
Yeah, it's really nice to see the AV Club 'style' applied to events like this. Makes for much nicer reading than the vast majority of bloated coverage of GDC.

There's also a scene in The Beach where it basically turns into a videogame… though I may have just blocked out that movie with memories of other videogames, and thus gotten it mixed up.
Was there an equivalent to that part in Doom where it basically turns into the video game (ie. first person camera, running around corridors shooting things)? Like, maybe the camera suddenly goes for a really wide side shot of two people fighting, and then one just starts crouch-kicking until the other one gives up?…
Maybe Tron as well… though to be honest I'm not positive about the game v. movie timeline.
