Jesus Christ Superstar is actually pretty great. But very few musicals have enough fans to fill arenas. It was a pretty stupid business decision from day one.

I'm sure the real reason behind casting Garfield was that having Garfield play a trans character would generate publicity. Win dances around that (pointing out the fact that Garfield is popular/plays Spiderman increases the potential impact to a viewer) but doesn't explicitly say it.
