Speaking as someone who grew up in Texas, can say I knew ~15, 5 of those had it ironically, the other 10 were racist. In both cases the person was trying to make a statement.

Same for me. The first half of the movie had a nice dark comedy feel to it… but the second half pretty much dropped that completely and tried to deliver an actual plot (which is a convoluted mess of elements… it's like they wanted to slap Fight Club's ending on top of Dostoyevsky's story).
