I hated it at first, which, being a big fan of both artists performing, was a huge bummer, but revisiting it in subsequent years, I realize it's actually not too bad.
For the most part, I feel like with voice acting, all bets are off. Women voice men. Men voice women. Adults voice children. Hank Azaria voices Apu, and even if that began as a stereotyped character, he's obviously become one of the most fully developed characters on that show.
Maybe it becomes a little more awkward if…
Yeah, I'm still very surprised at the degree of the negative reactions to it. I've legit complaints, and made a few myself, but I'm not quite sure what's inspiring the vitriol. Is it Zach Snyder?
I don't really follow the line in the review saying "even [Ambition] showed occasional flashes of the deep-thinker of yore." While The Gifted never goes all out go-go, it still has a few little bits of 70s-style arrangements. That was all scrubbed clean on Ambition. This album's not perfect, but at least it does a…
New J.Cole is definitely worth it. This is coming from someone who found his first album generic and uninteresting.
I'd probably go with a B, but yeah, I'd definitely agree that "LoveHate Thing" and "Gullible" are actually pretty terrific, while "Clappers" is an embarrassment. "Vanity" is heavy-handed, but doesn't bother me too much.
I too saw the Stooges at a festival and couldn't believe how much energy they had for an "old" band. By comparison, the Stone Temple Pilots set at the same show felt like it was performed by men in their 80s. For an extra layer of comparison, Chuck Berry, who is a man in his 80s, had a pretty great set, even if it was…
@avclub-01e8318c286a584caffbb596a95652d2:disqus Fingers crossed the "Chicago-based media company" that claimed all the writers is actually AVCU.
That's pretty much the way I felt about it too. This is a movie made to be dissected in film classes… it's very analytical and measured, but it's all about those analytic/measured elements and not about its heart or its characters. That's not necessarily a criticism, since it's very clearly a deliberate decision. But…
Speaking of stories about children venturing into magical worlds as a coping mechanism for being forced to grow up too fast, over the weekend I played an indie Brazilian game called Papo & Yo… which takes the same idea of a child befriending a gigantic monster and uses that as a metaphor for growing up with an…

When Steve Jobs finally loses it, he menaces his family with a croquet mallet (not an axe) like in the book.
Good job using a song already put in a freaking Windows 8 commercial. Idiots.
RE: Poor marketing
Sex schmex… these days it's a big news story any time ANY original screenplay leads to a hit.
The airplane scene actually had comedic escalation, stakes, and affected the story. The food poisoning was just everybody suddenly being sick, and could be pretty easily excised from the movie completely without affecting anything. I'm not saying I didn't laugh, but I definitely had a "that's it?" reaction when I…
Airbrushed Paula Deen looks like Kirby swallowed normal Paula Deen and gained her powers.
Nothing has ever been diminished by throwing in Peter Ustinov.
