Well that doesn't bode well, The Gunslinger is the only one I was able to just charge through in a day or two. That's not necessarily a knock on the others (depending which book I'm talking about), but I found it to be the most propulsive.

Well then good news! *SPOILER* There's a not remotely subtle Star Wars reference in book 5 of The Dark Tower.

I wouldn't start with Ubik for Dick's work. Start with his short stories. There are so many good ones and the wild imagination/speculative reasoning he really digs into in his novels is more a bit more focused.

In fact, I don't think watching the seasons in order is even strictly necessary, as long as you start at the beginning of each season. I mean, I'd still advise watching it all in order, but I started with the opening of season 4 (snoop buying the nail gun) and was totally hooked from that point forward.

I'd be worried that you'd have the self-restraint to not kick them in their face.

I saw a preview for this before Skyfall, and once the preview finished, there were 2 or 3 seconds of silence before somebody in the theater yelled "Boooo!"

I've recently decided I'll probably use the Decemberists' "Dear Avery" as a lullaby. Which I guess means I'll need to give my kid a three-syllable name that ends in an "ee" sound.

Patty and Selma mention early that it's "cougar season." I just figured it was a cougar.

Hey, Uncle-Father Oscar

The "How Far Did You Make It Before You Gave Up Reading the Series Entirely?" thread.

@avclub-c404a5adbf90e09631678b13b05d9d7a:disqus I generally agree with @avclub-4dae7032e72753a6c9d24a71307f561f:disqus 's point in most cases, but I don't feel that way about the Kvothe in The Name of the Wind. The Kvothe in The Wise Man's Fear, however…

I'm curious what turned you off about The Name of the Wind. I'd agree it could probably be trimmed down to a tighter, more efficient novel, but personally I enjoyed most of the overly detailed diversions into the sympathy magic system, etc.

Something something Tony Romo interception.

While Blood Meridian was the first McCarthy I read, I definitely agree that The Road works much better as an entry point to his work, even considering the bleakness.

I can't figure out if the "wave of zombies" thing is awesome or the dumbest thing I've ever seen.
